News hardware The iPhone 14 Pro has a big asset and Apple hasn’t talked about it
The iPhone 14 Pro aligns the new features compared to the iPhone 14, and if we put aside the Dynamic Island and other photo improvements, Apple seems to have omitted a point that is becoming increasingly important: 5G.
The iPhone 14 Pro’s 5G is faster
When releasing the iPhone 13, Apple creates a separation between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro by offering the high-end version an improved 5G. With more bands allowing it to be captured at a greater distance, the Cupertino brand did not hesitate to talk about it during the conference.
This year, the iPhone 14 range has just arrived and 5G is not one of the official novelties presented by Apple. Gold, the first tests have just been released, and it seems that the iPhone 14 Pro has more than one trick up its sleeve.
The SpeedSmart site was happy to compare the 5G connection speeds between the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro. It should be noted, however, that the results also apply to the iPhone 13 pro Max and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, being identical smartphones except for size and autonomy.
Here are the results obtained by SpeedSmart:
The tests are carried out on the two largest mobile operators in the USA: T-Mobile and Verizon. The figures may vary somewhat if they are to be applied to France, but for once There is no photo.
That’s a 38% jump in download speed seen on the T-Mobile network, and up to 32% with Verizon. Even if the Upload part is faster, it is especially the Download (downloads) that is skyrocketing. This is the most frequent use we make of a smartphone when listening to music, films, YouTube videos, social network content… This would be due to the integration ofa new 5G modem, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65, a step above the X60 on the iPhone 13 Pro.
No statistics concerning the iPhone 14, but it is very likely that we will find the same 5G modem as on the iPhone 13. Indeed, the iPhone 14 is quite poor in new features and Apple would not have been shy to mention an upgraded 5G if that was the case.
SpeedSmart also measures latency, and the iPhone 14 Pro still beats the 13 Pro on this score. Low latency allows a feeling of speed when browsing the Internet.
5G in France: getting better and better, but…
5G is still very recent in France, and network coverage continues to increase. It is currently concentrated around the big cities, but many small towns are entitled to their respective small antenna, rural areas being dominated by Free.
But what about 5G subscribers? Because if the deployment continues but no one subscribes, the interest is zero. According to Arcep, France has 4.1 million 5G subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, compared to 3 million in the last quarter of 2021. It’s far from 67 million for 4G of course, but the growth is there, and the iPhone is certainly not for nothing.
But while 5G subscription prices are higher than conventional 4G, operators are implementing plan changes that replace 4G with 5G, all with more GB and for more money. An ingenious strategy to accustom customers to spending more for more data in 5G.
