Scientists claim to have found the foolproof technique to put a crying baby to sleep

Even if the results only involve mothers, the technique is valid for anyone who wants to “provide an immediate solution to infant crying”.

Putting a crying baby to sleep will soon no longer be a nightmare. In a study published in the journal Current Biology, this Tuesday, September 13, Italian-Japanese scientists have detailed an unstoppable procedure to calm and put your newborn to sleep.

Even if the results only involve mothers, the technique is valid for anyone who wants to “provide an immediate solution to infant crying”.

What is the technique?

Professor Kuroda’s team recommends walking for five minutes with the crying infant, then sitting for five to eight minutes, holding the baby, before putting him back in his crib. For a secure hold, people should hold the infant’s body firmly and support the infant’s head.

The five-minute walk should be on a flat, clear path and at a steady pace, preferably without stops or sharp turns. This method greatly reduces crying, promotes sleep, and offers a behavioral protocol, according to scientists. Thanks to this technique, babies model their heart rate on the person who wears them, which has the effect of rocking them.

The eight minutes of sitting with the baby are paramount. Putting him directly into bed resulted in a third of infants crying again within 20 seconds.

Observations first made on mammals

To reach this conclusion, the researchers used previous observations made on altricial or altricial mammals, that is to say, whose young are born unable to move and feed themselves (such as dogs, mice or the monkey).

“As a mother of four, I was very surprised to see this result. I thought babies waking up during bedtime had to do with how they were put on the bed, like their posture, or how soft they were. movement”, explains Kumi Kuroda, who led this work.

“About 20 to 30% of infants cry excessively and have sleep disturbances for no apparent reason, which causes parental stress and can even trigger impulsive acts of abuse in a small number of cases”, points out the researcher.
