For a few years now, Apple has been able to settle permanently with the M1 and M2 processors more recently. These processors under ARM technology are not reserved for the Apple ecosystem, Qualcomm does the same for Windows PCs. And this is the case with the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, announced a few months ago now, and with a new strategy for the coming years, presented during IFA 2022.
With IFA 2022, Qualcomm wants to invest in the laptop market with ARM
Qualcomm has therefore been offering ARM processors for laptops for several years. But more and more brands are working with Qualcomm to integrate them into their machines. This is very recently the case with Lenovo, which has just launched the first Thinkpad laptop with a Snapdragon processor.
This Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is engraved in 5nm, and promises a battery of several days. Compared to the previous generation, the CPU speed has almost doubled, 85% more to be precise. And that’s 60% more GPU performance than you’d expect. In addition, with Snapdragon modules, we can find 5G Sub6 and mmWave, up to 10Gbps in theory. We now have to wait for this millimetric 5G to arrive in France. In the future, Qualcomm is really looking to invest in this market, and therefore has projects planned for the next few years.
The Lenovo ThinkPad x13s, the first Thinkpad equipped with the 8cx Gen 3
The Lenovo ThinkPad x13s is therefore equipped with this processor under ARM. The objective sought is to bring the experience that one can have of smartphones to a ThinkPad laptop. And this therefore requires finesse, which this all-on-board allows, but also a great autonomy announced. Beyond being the first Thinkpad under Snapdragon, it is also the first portable PC marketed with this Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 elsewhere.
Many uses are imagined by Lenovo. With this announced great autonomy, and the 5G mmWave, it is productivity on the move that is sought after. Wherever you are, no need to have Wifi, or connection sharing, it’s an all-in-one PC. An image of your smartphone in a laptop format.
Numerous partnerships to create an entire ecosystem
The PC market is important, but Qualcomm Snapdragon is not just that. You surely know that they equip the majority of Android smartphones. Smartwatches also use Qualcomm processors. Thus, many products are in this ecosystem, and this goes through brands that offer these products. We were therefore able to see on the occasion of the introductory conference of the IFA, a panel of announced partnerships.
These partnerships include Bose, Samsung and Meta. For the part with Bose, it goes through the Snapdragon Sound label, supported, during this IFA 2022, by Qualcomm. And then Samsung and Meta are symbols of this ecosystem strategy. Samsung obviously offers smartphones, tablets and watches. The next high-end smartphones will therefore be equipped with a Snapdragon processor, and Exynos therefore takes a back seat. For the tablets, they are already under Snapdragon, only the watches that keep the Exynos W920 remain this year.
And as far as Meta is concerned, a real Metaverse-oriented strategy is orchestrated through this partnership. The Oculus Quest 2, now owned by Meta, are equipped with processors from Snapdragon. So you now understand what strategy for PCs and the ecosystem is coming for Qualcomm, presented during IFA 2022.
